The 1986 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am marked the midpoint of Pontiac’s third-generation F-body and featured the angular styling that defined the model throughout the 1980s. The standard engine was a 305-cubic-inch V8, with the optional fuel-injected 305 TPI producing 190 horsepower and 285 lb-ft of torque. Other Trans Am engines included the carbureted 305, while a small number—only 26 units—were equipped with the 190-horsepower L69 High Output V8 before it was discontinued mid-year. The available WS6 Special Performance Package added larger stabilizer bars, four-wheel disc brakes, and upgraded wheels and tires. Pontiac produced 48,870 Trans Ams for 1986, making it one of the more numerous Trans Am model years of the third generation. The 1986 Trans Am was also significant as the final year before Pontiac introduced a redesigned rear spoiler and the new GTA model for 1987.
