In 1983, Buick produced a limited 500 examples (with some sources citing 502 including prototypes) of the Riviera XX Anniversary Edition hardtop coupe to commemorate the model's 20th anniversary and replicate the features of the two convertible pace cars used for the Indianapolis 500. Finished exclusively in two-tone beige with brown accent stripes and 24-karat gold-plated badging/emblems, these featured unique Appliance wire wheels with gold centers, Uniroyal Royal Seal tires with gold stripes, Gran Touring suspension, four-wheel disc brakes, a 140-mph speedometer, hand-made German wool carpeting, English walnut wood veneer trim, a leather-wrapped wood steering wheel, suede-insert leather seats embroidered with individual production numbers, and a brass glovebox plaque—powered by either the standard 4.1-liter V6 or optional 5.0-liter V8 mated to a four-speed automatic transmission.
