The 1973 Mercury Cougar Convertible was the final year for the factory Cougar convertible and holds the distinction of being the last convertible produced by Ford Motor Company until the Mustang convertible returned for 1983. Built on the Mustang-based platform used by the 1971–1973 Cougar, it rode a longer 112.1-inch wheelbase and received a federally mandated 5-mph front bumper for 1973. Every Cougar used a V8, with the 351 Cleveland 2-barrel rated at 168 horsepower as the standard engine and the 351 Cobra Jet available as an option. An automatic transmission became standard, although a 4-speed manual remained available. Convertible production totaled just 4,450 cars for 1973, including 1,284 base Cougars and 3,166 XR-7s, making the final-year Cougar convertible a relatively uncommon example of the early-1970s American drop-top era.
