The convertible top looks good and operates as it should. The engine and Automatic transmission have both been rebuilt and have approximately 5,000 miles since the work was completed. The car runs and drives great. Inside, the original Blue interior retains its bucket seats, door panels and carpeting, along with the factory AM/FM stereo, gauge package and tachometer dash. The stereo is reported to work. The trunk remains complete with its spare tire and jack. The car was originally equipped with air conditioning, although some underhood A/C components are missing. 🧠 Did you know?
The 1972 Mercury Cougar XR-7 Convertible was the upscale open-air version of Mercury’s second-generation Cougar and one of the more distinctive personal-luxury convertibles of the early 1970s. The XR-7 featured upgraded interior trim, woodgrain accents, and additional standard equipment, while the 112.1-inch-wheelbase Cougar shared its basic architecture with the Ford Mustang but was larger and more luxury-oriented. Power came from Mercury’s 351 Cleveland V8, with the standard 2-barrel version rated at about 163–164 net horsepower and the available 351 Cobra Jet producing 266 net horsepower. The 1972 XR-7 convertible was also relatively uncommon, with only 1,929 produced, compared with 26,802 XR-7 hardtops.
