🧠 Did you know? In 1971, the Ford Mustang Convertible was a straightforward open-top version of the newly restyled and larger second-generation Mustang, measuring over two inches longer and noticeably wider than the 1970 model, with a base price of $3,227. It came standard with a 250-cid inline-six rated at 145 gross hp or the 302-cid V8 at 210 hp, but could be ordered with any available engine including the 351 Cleveland (both the 2V version at 240 hp and the 4V M-code at 285 hp; later in the year the Q-code 351 Cobra Jet at ~280 hp) up to the 429-cid Cobra Jet (370 hp in non-Ram Air form). The power-top mechanism, high-back bucket seats, and all-vinyl interior were standard, while options included front disc brakes, power steering, and various suspension packages. Out of 151,484 total Mustangs produced that year, Ford built just 6,121 convertibles — the rarest body style and a notably low-volume choice as pony-car demand continued to soften. Real-world performance varied widely by engine; a typical 302 V8 example delivered adequate everyday acceleration without matching the quicker fastback. It offered open-air driving with the era’s typical mix of comfortable cruising and solid build quality, but without any special high-performance badging or unique convertible-only packages. In short, the 1971 Mustang Convertible was a competent, somewhat exclusive drop-top that gave buyers the classic Mustang experience in a bigger, heavier package during a transitional time for the model.
