Vehicle History

This 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS396 has an impressive combination of factory equipment, rare colors, documentation and restoration quality. It is powered by the desirable L34 396/350HP V8 and backed by an M21 4-speed, with G80 Positraction, F41 Special Performance Suspension and the rare ZL2 Special Ducted Hood. Finished in factory Shadow Gray, it has the look of a serious muscle car without relying on one of the more common Chevelle colors. The car was subsequently given a Concours-level frame-off restoration by a noted Chevelle expert, and the quality of the finished work earned it a feature in the final issue of ACES Magazine. ❤️ From the Seller:
“This exceptional 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS396 is one of those rare examples where pedigree, documentation, factory equipment, and restoration quality all come together. Benefiting from a meticulous Concours-level frame-off restoration performed by a noted Chevelle expert, this SS396 is absolutely stunning from top to bottom. The car is documented with two original build sheets, providing important verification of its factory configuration and extensive list of desirable options. The quality and significance of the restoration also earned this Chevelle a feature in the final issue of ACES Magazine. Photos documenting the restoration process are included with the car. Under the hood is the desirable L34 396ci V8 rated at 350 horsepower, paired with an M21 4-speed manual transmission. Power is sent through a G80 Positraction rear end with a highway-friendly 3.31 axle ratio, providing the classic big-block, four-speed driving experience that makes these Chevelles so sought after. Adding considerably to its appeal is the very rare factory Shadow Gray exterior color. Combined with the factory hood and deck stripes, SS styling, special ducted hood, and white-letter tires, the color gives this Chevelle an understated yet aggressive presence that stands apart from more commonly seen examples. This SS was also ordered with an impressive selection of factory equipment, making it far more than a basic muscle car.”

🧠 Did you know?
The 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS marked the high point of Chevelle big-block performance before the muscle-car era began to wind down. Under the hood, Chevrolet enlarged its legendary “396” big-block to 402 cubic inches for 1970 with a slight overbore. Because the “396” name still carried so much brand equity, Chevrolet continued to market the car as the SS 396 and kept the classic badging. The standard engine in the SS 396 package was the L34 big-block, a hydraulic-lifter V8 factory-rated at 350 horsepower and 415 lb-ft of torque. Buyers who wanted solid-lifter performance could order the optional L78, rated at 375 horsepower. The top option was the new SS 454 package with the LS6 big-block, factory-rated at 450 horsepower and 500 lb-ft of torque.Matching that power, the 1970 Chevelle received a completely redesigned body with a more aggressive front end, sculpted rear quarters, and a wider, more commanding stance.
