Maintenance & Vehicle History
The 1964 ½ Ford Mustang is an early-production version of the iconic car, officially titled as a 1965 model but built between March and August of 1964. The combination here is the real story: D-code 289, four-barrel, four-speed, and Poppy Red. Early Mustangs are plentiful, but finding one with this particular drivetrain and a largely original interior makes this coupe considerably more interesting than an ordinary six-cylinder automatic example. It has the look of an early Mustang, the right equipment underneath, and the four-on-the-floor setup that makes driving it part of the appeal. The factory air conditioning is still present, although the compressor belt is currently off. The compressor and clutch both spin, but the system will need a belt and likely a recharge to operate. The trunk is clean and includes the spare tire, jack, lug wrench, extra hardware, brackets and pulleys, and additional seat belts. The car has some minor cosmetic imperfections consistent with its driver-quality condition, including bumper pitting, fine scratches on the door handles, a small seat split and slight waviness at the bottoms of the door panels. The seller describes it as a survivor-type car and reports that it was driven recently and ran out very well. The odometer shows 23,956 miles. Located in Clarence, Iowa.
❤️ From the Seller:
“1964 ½ Ford Mustang coupe. This car is painted in its original color of Poppy Red. It is a D-code 289, which means it's a factory four-barrel and it's a factory four-speed car. Magnum 500 wheels, redline tires. Very nice, clean, which I would call a survivor car. Factory air conditioning on this car. The belt's not on it. The compressor spins and the clutch spins. So I think you probably put a belt on it and probably charge the air back up on it. The bumper got a little bit of pitting in the bumpers. I'd say it's a driver-quality car. The paint on the car is very nice. Um, you know, there's a few imperfections. There's a couple dirt nibs here and there. I mean, it's not perfect, but very, very nice. Very solid car. All original interior in the car. Does have one little split right here in the top of the seat. You probably could, if you're at home, you could probably sew that right up. White headliner, visors. Factory four-speed, like I said. Inside the trunk is clean. Got a spare tire. Got some extra hardware, brackets and pulleys, some seat belts. There's a jack in there, spare tire, lug wrench. Got a little bit of wave on the bottoms of the door panels. You can kind of see it right here. Not bad. Dash looks good. AM radio works. Glove box light works. Blower motor works. Horn works. Turn the headlights on over there. All the glass is in good shape. Little bit of, you know, little bit of fine scratches in the door handles. That's what I'm saying. It's a driver car. It's not a perfect car, but it's a nice, clean Poppy Red '64 ½ Mustang. Motor sounds good. The car runs really well. Headlight signal. License plate light, tail lights, turn signals, they all work. It's a real good car. I drove this car last week one day and it really ran out well. Does have an oil pressure gauge mounted way down there, below 60 lb of oil pressure right there. It's got about 45 or 50 at an idle, so you can tell it's a good, strong engine. Gas gauge works. Temperature gauge works. Speedometer works. Really nice car. Going right through the gears. Kind of a rare car, a D-code 289, four-barrel, four-speed, Poppy Red car.Pretty neat car. Four on the floor. Yeah. Car runs really good."

“1964½ Mustang” is a collector nickname, not a Ford model year. Every early Mustang’s VIN starts with 5, so Ford titled them as 1965 cars. The label refers to the first production run—built mainly from March 9 to mid-August 1964—before the late-1965 running changes. The car was shown to the press April 14 and to the public April 17, 1964, at the New York World’s Fair; Ford took about 22,000 orders that first day. Only two bodies existed then: hardtop and convertible (no fastback). Common early-run production figures are 92,705 hardtops and 28,833 convertibles, about 121,538 cars. Engines unique to this early group were the U-code 170-cid six (101 hp), F-code 260 V-8 (164 hp), D-code 289 four-barrel (210 hp), and K-code 289 Hi-Po (271 hp). Wheelbase was 108 inches, length about 181.6 inches. Base prices were roughly $2,320–$2,368 for the hardtop and $2,557–$2,614 for the convertible. A Mustang convertible also paced the 1964 Indianapolis 500.
