🧠 Did you know?
In 1979, the Pontiac Trans Am marked the high-water mark for second-generation Firebird sales, with 117,108 units built — the most of any Trans Am model year — as the bold, shaker-hooded coupe with its signature screaming chicken decal, available T-tops, and aggressive styling continued to draw buyers even in an emissions-regulated era. Most came with the Oldsmobile-built 403-cid V8 rated at 185 net horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque, while a lucky minority received the optional Pontiac T/A 6.6 (W72) 400-cid V8, rated at 220 net hp and 320 lb-ft, sourced from engines stockpiled the previous year since Pontiac had ended 400 production. A tested example with the 400 and four-speed manual ran 0-60 in about 6.7–7 seconds and the quarter-mile in 15.3 seconds at 96–97 mph, with the WS6 Special Performance Package (including four-wheel disc brakes on later builds) praised by Car and Driver as delivering the best handling of any 1979 car tested. The Trans Am offered a mix of low-end torque for real-world driving, decent road manners thanks to its front-heavy but balanced chassis, and that unmistakable ’70s muscle-car presence without pretending to be a quarter-mile dominator like its early-’70s predecessors. It wasn’t the fastest or most powerful Trans Am ever made, but in its final year before the platform’s major refresh, it proved the formula still worked — a competent, eye-catching performer that sold strongly when many similar cars were fading away.
