🧠 Did you know?
The redesigned Oldsmobile Cutlass marked a new era for one of the brand’s most successful nameplates when it moved to GM’s smaller intermediate platform (commonly associated with the later G-body) beginning in 1978, with the 1979 models continuing that generation. The 260-cubic-inch V8 had already been available in earlier Cutlass models and remained an option in 1978–79 alongside V6 and other V8 engines; a diesel version of the 260 debuted for certain 1979 models. The new-generation Cutlass was lighter and more compact than its predecessor, yet retained the formal styling and comfortable interior that had made the nameplate so popular. The lineup included several distinct versions, including the Cutlass Supreme, Cutlass Calais, and Cutlass Salon, allowing Oldsmobile to cover both luxury and sport-oriented segments. With its combination of downsized dimensions, traditional styling, and available V8 power, the 1979 Cutlass captures the transition American manufacturers were making toward smaller, more efficient cars at the end of the 1970s.
