🧠 Did you know
The 1968 Volkswagen Westfalia camper was the first factory camper built on the new “Bay Window” Type 2 platform (introduced in August 1967). It replaced the beloved split-window “Splittie” with a larger, one-piece curved windshield, bigger side windows, sliding side doors on both sides (in most markets), and a more modern dashboard — all of which dramatically improved visibility and everyday usability. While the iconic front-hinged fiberglass pop-top roof had actually debuted on the final-year 1967 Split-window Westfalias, the 1968 Bay Window models carried it forward unchanged, giving campers full standing headroom and a second-row bunk. The classic Westfalia interior layout — the fold-flat Z-bed (rock-and-roll bed), sink, stove, icebox, wardrobe closet, and clever storage cabinets — was also largely carried over from the late Split-window campers, but now packaged in a wider, taller, and more refined body. With its cheerful two-tone paint, go-anywhere air-cooled reliability, and perfect compact size, the 1968 Westfalia instantly became the face of the emerging van-life movement and remains one of the most beloved and collectible VW campers ever made.
